Beatitudes

THE BEATITUDES (Matthew 5:3-10)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they who mourn,

for they will be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the land.

6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

for they will be satisfied.

7 Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

8 Blessed are the clean of heart,

for they will see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

So, what's the point of these Beatitudes?  Why are they so important and why does it feel like we talk about them every year?  Watch this clip and see if it makes sense.

Question 1:  Following The Beatitudes will help us to be what?

Doing the right thing is not easy, you may be happier in the long run, but that does NOT mean it'll be easy.  Watch this clip, it's about a cop that can't cover the tip for a meal he eats at a diner.  He promises his waitress that if he wins the lottery he'll split the winnings with her, as a substitute for not having tip money.  He actually ends up winning the lottery ($4 million) and is in turmoil over what to do.  His wife, Murial, doesn't want him to keep good on the promise, his work partner doesn't really weigh in on the situation so Charlie is left in agony over what to do.... he knows what the right thing is, but it's not easy sharing $2 million with a stranger.

In the end, Charlie shares with the waitress, but people think he's crazy and his wife ends up divorcing him.  Charlie did the right thing, he remained honorable and kept his word.

Question 2: State which Beatitude Charlie exhibits and explain the benefit of doing the right thing.

Dust off your YouCat and open to questions 281, 282, 283, & 284 (these can be found on pg 164-165.  Read those questions and answers, read the quotes in the margins, too.

Question 3: Who said, "Happiness is not in us, nor is happiness outside of us.  Happiness is in God alone.  And if we have found him, then it is everywhere."?

Question 4: How can we find happiness "in God", what does that even mean? (hint: it has something to do with how we live)

Question 5: In your OWN words, explain why the Beatitudes are important.

Go to the beginning of your YouCat and check out question 3 on page 14.  Read the whole thing.

Question 6:  What does Edith Stein have to say about truth?

Question 7:  What is  --> Religion?

Now, go back to the Beatitudes on pg. 165 it's question 283 and look at the Beatitudes while you watch this video.  The Beatitudes are not really written in a language we use in everyday conversation so their meaning may be lost on us at times.  This video will help put the Beatitudes into a context that's easier to comprehend.  Pay attention because at 4:22 in the video you'll see a picture of St. John Paul II visiting the man that shot him.  St. John Paul II forgave this man and went to visit him in prison, that's showing major mercy.

Watch this video while looking at question 283 (pg. 165) so you can follow along.

Question 8:  Which Beatitude do you like the most right now?
Question 9:  Why?

    1. St. Agatha, high school is hard and having "extra stuff" just makes it more difficult. Know that whatever it is, I'm happy to listen, even just via text, if ya want. Lean on your Christian friends, pray together, if you can. If that isn't something you're comfortable doing just tell God you're tired, He understands. Jesus experienced all the tough stuff of the world that we experience, he gets it.

  2. 2. Never mind I found out who Charlie is although I still can't see the video. I think it's blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God. He made a promise to the waitress and didn't think he would even win the lottery, God saw that, he did win, and he did end up sharing and keeping his promise.

We can have trust that God knows and understands what it's like to live here and that some things will be difficult, sometimes VERY difficult. Trusting in God's way will ultimately bring happiness.

    1. Great job, St. Gemma! Nice answer to #2, doing the right thing isn't always easy but, in the end it is. It's easier to not have the added weight of sin in your life. God is truth, so if we're striving to live a truthful and virtuous life we are in fact following God, even if we don't acknowledge him.
